All over the world, the hard work of volunteers from animal protection associations helps put an end to situations that are spiraling out of control. This is precisely what happened in a “house of horror” in Wales, where around ten animals left to their own fate almost lost their lives.
In the United Kingdom , volunteers from the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals ( RSPCA ) regularly investigate cases of animal abuse, and do everything they can to stop it. Recently, it was the house of Mr Thomas and Mrs Perry , in Mountain Ash ( Wales ), which caught their attention.
The organization made several attempts to enter the couple’s home following reports. “ Multiple cages were seen in the garden, flies were seen inside the property, and a smell of cat urine was described by Inspector Gemma Cooper when she looked through the box to letters ,” an RSPCA spokesperson told Wales Online .
A strange bag
A few months ago, as Gemma Cooper was about to carry out another check on David Thomas and Pauline Perry ‘s house , she spotted the latter walking down the street with a strange bag . “ It seemed very heavy, because she placed it on the ground about every 10 meters,” explains the inspector . Sheba, a dog she had on a leash, wore a red vest that covered most of her body. »
As Gemma approached her, she was horrified to hear cats struggling in the bag in question. “ Several cats were huddled together inside a transport crate […] It gave off a strong smell of urine and excrement ,” continues the RSPCA inspector .
The “house of horror”
The latter ended up entering Pauline Perry ‘s home , where she witnessed a spectacle of desolation . “ I was hit by the same foul smell […] and I had to hold my breath. We went into the kitchen where there was cat feces on the floor, along the walls and on the kitchen cabinets. »
“ There were a lot of flies in the room. In the middle of the room was a guinea pig cage with 2 cats inside. These cats had no access to water or a litter box and the place was far too small to accommodate them ,” says Gemma .
The end of an ordeal
The felines had numerous health problems, including hair loss, fleas, and low weight. RSPCA inspectors took them to a vet, along with Sheba . “ All the animals were a little nervous, but we were able to handle them easily after they were released ,” says Gemma .
Following this mishap, the rescued dog and cats were treated and then returned to the RSPCA shelter . Some have been adopted, while others are still waiting for a forever home. One thing is certain: they will never have to fight for survival again.
Their former masters had to answer for their actions in court. They appeared at Merthyr Tydfil court charged with neglecting 11 cats. They were both sentenced to a community sentence of 12 months, accompanied by 10 days of rehabilitation activity, as well as a fine of €50 and court costs of €290. They are prohibited from owning animals for 4 years.
