German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul confirmed on August 31 that Germany has blocked a new proposal by the European Commission (EC) to sanction Israel.
According to RT, last week, the EC proposed suspending Israel’s participation in the Horizon Europe technology research program, cutting off funding for Israeli companies in the fields of UAV technology, cybersecurity and artificial intelligence (AI). This move is aimed at pressuring Israel to “open the door” for humanitarian aid shipments to the Gaza Strip.
Speaking to reporters, Mr. Wadephul said that Germany does not support the above proposals, because it “does not believe” that they are strong enough to impact Israel.
According to Mr. Wadephul, Germany has limited the supply of weapons to Israel that could be used in the Gaza Strip and the EU should follow this direction.
“I think this is a very targeted measure, very important and very necessary,” Mr. Wadephul said.
On August 31, the Israeli army continued to attack the suburbs of Gaza (the largest city in the Gaza Strip) while Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s security cabinet was convened to discuss plans to control the entire city.
